Science Consulting

WHAT SCIENTIFIC INPUT WE OFFER TO OUR CLIENTS.

Our chief areas of expertise are in:

Dr. Tedesco's statement:

My experience over 25 years in 3 domains - scientific, industrial and regulatory - has exposed me to many aspects of the interplay between these three worlds when pharmaceutical companies place powerful drugs on the market as treatments for various conditions.

With my scientific background I first of all help you identify, locate and sometimes engage those medical or scientific authorities best suited to speaking to the matters at issue.

When needed, I also contribute carefully written, detailed research on the current status of a given treatment involved in a particular case. If appropriate I act as an expert witness so long as I stick to academic questions as to the mechanisms, risk factors and suitable dosing regimes of drugs. I am
not a medical doctor, and it would probably not help a case if I were asked to directly judge under oath the adequacy of many clinical practices.

Forensic Science Consulting

Key Molecular Corp. (KMC) has acted as an independent Scientific Analyst for a number of law firms in Canada. When needed,we have undertaken extensive literature critiques. As well, when needed, we have identified and performed forensic tests to resolve various legal disputes.

In particular, KMC has been retained by Ontario law firms to prepare science reports. Sometimes this involves gathering scientific evidence to assist in the defence of a company against litigant claims of liability or damages. We have, for example, conducted lab tests to determine the intrinsic flammability of a commercial product that was misused by a plaintiff, causing burn injuries.

In other cases our work involves providing the scientific background needed by the judiciary to determine if initiation of a class action is justified by the evidence.

Liability Cases

Such work typically involves a systematic appraisal of scientific evidence that may or may not support a claim of culpability against a company such as a multinational pharmaceutical, a cement company or a manufacturer of flammable goods. An assessment is made regarding the basis for liability for any harm done by their product or project. Such work has sometimes involved screening and assessment of thousands of peer-reviewed science articles. In other cases it involved a combination of field work and of laboratory testing of materials, done at the University of Toronto.

Class Actions

In cases involving possible class action suits to be undertaken by Ontario law firms, each law firm needs an independent, detailed and authoritative review of what scientific basis there may be to persuade the judiciary of the merits for a particular class action to proceed in Canada. KMC has been involved in such cases, and was able to produce a solid scientific document to support the merits of said case.

What is Needed

In all these cases, the job requires a clear statement of evidence-based conclusions that are supportable both by the evidence cited and by the scientific authority of the expert author, with direct expertise accrued over their scientific career. If the needed expertise is not in-house, we will find it for you in the broder scientific community.
